Framed at 13.25x17.25 inches in a matte black wood shadow box frame with plexiglass
Single matted with white Print at 8x10 Title - Sunburst This photograph was taken on a summer morning walk in the river valley. I got up really early so that I would be at the river when the sun rose. This was captured as the sun burst over the horizon. It puts the old Rossdale Water Treatment Plant and the Walterdale Bridge in silhouette. These are both iconic structures in our river valley. It was a great photo shoot in the river valley.

I decided that I did not have to leave the city to set out on a photography trip. I checked with Google Maps and headed off shortly after 6:00 am. My destination was Village at Griesbach which is an award winning urban village in the north end of the city. It is built on the site of a former Canadian Forces Base. Plans call for an extensive network of parks, trails and four stormwater lakes to provide recreational opportunities for residents. A central park provides views to the downtown, a community garden and a toboggan hill. When completed, the development will have 112 acres (44 hectares) of schools, parks and open spaces.
One of my challenges on Flickr was Oil on Water. It was on my "Photography Techniques to Try list but I had not so far. Well, it was time. This is the video I found most helpful on line. Visual Arts Photography Tutorial Macro - Using Oil, Water and Food Coloring I've done 3 different photo sessions with this technique. My photos have improved as I learn more about the process. Warning - This process is very addictive and deciding which shots to keep is very time consuming.
I found the experience very worth while. Give it a try!
It has been several years since I visited this great place and with the new Aga Kahn Garden I was really looking forward to seeing some great new stuff. There are several gardens to visit. The Kurimoto Japanese Garden, the Aga Kahn Muslim Garden, the Indigenous Garden and the Patrick Seymour Alpine Garden. There are 3 Indoor Showhouses and my favorite is the tropical one with the butterflies.
There is a new sign at the entrance, the facilities have been updated, the food has been upgraded and the paths have been widened and are smoother. I will be making blog entries for these interesting places.
This art show is the Alberta Community Art Clubs Association's (ACACA) - Alberta Wide Show. There were 150 pieces to be juried which was taking place at 1:00 pm. There were many volunteers and 150 boxes that had to be emptied and organized by category.
I helped where I could. I learned how art is hung in a gallery. There are metal or plastic cords hung from a rail onto which several types of hangers can be strung. The hangers move up and down as needed to accommodate the art and the cords can be moved along the rail as needed. There are many lights on the ceiling which highlight the art. When the jurors arrived we headed for lunch. Two hours later the winners had been selected. Now it was my turn to work. I was there to photograph the winners of the show for the association. There was a variety of sizes and types of frames. About half were framed with glass which meant setting up my black backdrop. I set up my tripod in a corner of the gallery where I hung the pieces each their turn. What I learned in the morning came in handy as I handled art some of which was nearly 4 feet tall. The details of the award and the piece had to be documented in photo as well. Once photographed I handed them to the curator who was there to set up the placement of about 100 pieces of art. It took about 2 hours to get that done. Meanwhile behind me some art is being placed back into their boxes to be returned to the artists. I was headed home so I did not see the show actually hung and ready to be enjoyed. I learned a lot in this experience and I may do it again. I will be working on a solution to be able to position the art with glass perpendicular to the camera. |
